School Library Association

Yorkshire and Humberside Branch

Thursday 9 February 2006 | The Bar Convent, York
Annual Workshop and AGM

Training Courses:

Course A:
Cat and Class Demystified
· Brenda Hooper
Brenda Hooper is the Manager: Children and Schools for NYCC Library and Information Services and has many years of experience working in public, higher education and school library services. She now runs a joint public library/school library service across the county.
Cataloguing and classification give a structure to the organisation and retrieval of library resources and as a specialism can be daunting to staff with little experience or knowledge.  The aim of this session is to demystify the Dewey scheme and to give library staff confidence to apply the basic principles of cat and class within their own library.

Course B:
Stock Selection and the Library Budget · Catherine Dobson
Catherine Dobson is Team Leader: Young People and Schools for NYCC.  Catherine is a Chartered Librarian and also holds  post-grad. qualifications in teaching and in leadership and management. She has experience working in both primary and secondary schools. During her 7 years with the School Library Service Catherine has advised and assisted schools with choosing and purchasing stock.  This course will look at deciding which resources to buy for the school library and how to juggle that often-too-small budget to get the best results.

Course C:
Events and Ideas at a Moment's Notice · Lynne Coppendale
Lynne Coppendale is a Chartered Librarian and the Chair of SLA Yorkshire and Humberside.  She is currently on maternity leave from her position as Librarian at Danum STC in Doncaster.
This workshop will give you lots of ideas, contacts and website addresses to help you organise something special at a moment’s notice!  There will be an opportunity for everyone to contribute and share details of successful events they have run.

Course D:
Children Do Read — Fact! · Lyn Hopson, Jane Harvey and Lesley Hurworth
Lyn Hopson, Jane Harvey and Lesley Hurworth are librarians at secondary schools in Doncaster.  They all have several years’ experience of running reading groups and of shadowing the Carnegie and Greenaway Medals  with secondary and primary level pupils. Lyn has also led the setting up of the Doncaster Children’s Book Award which is a collaboration between the school and public libraries in the town.
The session will look at setting up, running and maintaining attendance at reading groups within school, followed by tips on shadowing young people’s book awards.

Meal and Mingle:

A delicious buffet with an opportunity to meet other School Librarians and share ideas and anecdotes!

An Evening at Borders:

Borders bookshop is situated in the centre of York opposite the famous Betty’s Teashop.  You are invited to come and listen to a talk by a local author who will give advice on organizing author visits to schools.  Refreshments will be served and you will have a chance to browse the shelves and, if you wish to purchase, to take advantage of a fantastic 15% discount on all books!
